This topic is nothing new, but worth revisiting from time to time…and the TIME is NOW.
Today’s NYTIMES.com post was my inspiration for this post: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/11/well/move/heated-workouts-fitness-benefits.html
I also found this blog post on this subject: https://blogs.bcm.edu/2024/08/26/staying-safe-during-heated-workouts/
In addition to the discussions above, here’s my take on temperature in the cycle studio:
- Everything in moderation
- Honor YOUR body and make modifications, as needed
- Do your own research and consider consulting with a trusted medical professional about variations in your fitness routine
- Class participants: talk with the group fitness instructor about their take on turning up the heat…if you feel unsafe, look for other options
- Instructors: talk with your class participants about general preferences about temperature and airflow…always take a SAFETY FIRST position

Finally, I found this interesting post by Les Mills.
It addresses much more than temperature of the studio, and gets into humidity levels, general ventilation, as well as, equipment layout, lighting, and sound. Nothing specifically discussed about air flow and use of fans…that’s been a HOT potato topic in the past 10+ years that I’ve been at the YMCA. I can say that most participants are fans of FANS…and now every cycle studio in our Grand Rapids association has at least 3-4 wall fans. The Mary Free Bed YMCA cycle studio has a total of EIGHT FANS (4 ceiling mounted, 4 wall mounted…all with variable speed options).
SIX QUESTIONS about YOUR indoor cycle studio?
- Is temperature monitored and set to a specified temperature?
- What is the target temperature range?
- Is the humidity level monitored?
- If so, what is the approximate humidity level?
- Is air flow provided only by the HVAC forced-air system, or are ceiling/wall fans used to keep air moving throughout the studio?
- Is overall air flow, temperature, and air quality adequate?
Thanks…ENJOY THE RIDE!
