Sunday’s LET THE BEAT DROP cycle class started at 9AM, as scheduled…running for about 45 minutes. Instructor Æ was ready to roll with 17 of the 20 Schwinn Z Bikes reserved. Here are some notes from my short 75-minute visit:

  • Welcoming staff at the front desk – this was my first visit to the new Walker location, and Vanessa give me a complete walk-through and reviewed plans and pricing
  • For an early Sunday morning, the men’s locker room could have been cleaner…but I had access to a large locker for my change of cloths
  • The cycle studio is a multi-level stadium design with 21 bikes on four separate levels. The spacious cycle studio allows for comfortable spacing of bikes. The space is well appointed with class-facing mirrors, colorful ambient lighting, full range sound system, and good air-flow / ventilation. The front and side walls feature motivational art. No large flat screen monitors are mounted in the studio.
  • The bikes are great…seemingly Schwinn’s current premium studio bike with technology that offers integration with heart rate monitors, mobile phones, and smart watches. We did an rpm-focused COLOR RIDE (Green, Yellow, Orange, Red). Not only can you see your performance stats on the monitor…you can see what zone/color the rest of the class is in by looking at the LED lights near the flywheel.
  • The instructor (Æ for my class) was great with cues, optional modifications, reminders about breathing, form, cadence and resistance. He was very active vocally…with adult-oriented language. Music choices were good many remixes and EDM selections from warm-up to cool-down (I snagged a couple tracks for a future class).
  • Extras…not much, participants bring their own SPD-cycling shoes (not required for class), towels, beverage. No wet wipes for clean-up, just paper towel and a bottle of cleaning fluid (haven’t seen that in years!)
  • All in all, a great Sunday morning SPIN at one of the newest facilities in greater Grand Rapids!

Welcome to West Michigan CRUNCH and THANKS Æ for a great FIRST RIDE!
